Favourite Book Series

Much like with TV or movies, re-reading a favourite book can provide so much comfort. Here are some book series’ that I have enjoyed over and over again.

While putting this list together I did notice that I have a favourite “theme” in my reading. I enjoy, and relate, to books about a chosen family. My own family life is…complicated…and I realized a long time ago that DNA makes you related, it doesn’t make you family. Sometimes the best family is that one that you make. I find comfort in reading about a chosen family.

So grab a tea, your favourite blanket and settle in for a good read.

Harry Potter

I legit LOVE the Harry Potter series, both the books and the movies!!

These books are just fun to read at any age. Kids read them and see themselves. They see a world of magic, friendship and overcoming hardship. These books prove that DNA does not make you a family. That you can overcome just about anything!

On another note, it is entirely possible to enjoy Harry Potter and the magical world and completely disagree with the author. If you choose to not read them or watch the movies, or upcoming new TV series, then thats up to you. I personally will continue to enjoy this magical world, while still holding on to my beliefs.

Percy Jackson

My love of greek mythology in fun story form!!

While the main character might be a pre-teen, I think almost everyone can relate to the feeling of being a failure, that they don’t belong, that they are just looking for a place to fit in.

Again, the common theme is that family is complicated and you can have a chosen family. The books explore the more basic side of greek mythology and teenage relationships with dealing with all the challenges that brings.

Check out the new Percy Jackson series, now on Disney+. As a huge fan of the books, I give it 2 thumbs way way up!!

The Bridgerton Series by Julia Quinn

I have been a fan of this series since the first book, The Duke and I, was first released in 2000. I have read all 8 books multiple times and just love them.

Each book focuses on a different Bridgerton sibling, and all the love and challenges of having a close, but large nosey, loving family.

Considered to be a “regency romance” series, taking place in the early 1800’s, explores the pressures on both men and women, how to balance your family, the societal expectations and your own wants and desires.

With the new Netflix now released, many fans, who have clearly not read the books, are questioning all the casting choices. Let me tell you, the series is GREAT and the changes to the books are fabulous.

For The Roses Series by Julie Garwood

In keeping with my “family doesn’t have to involve DNA” trend, this is a super great, fun series set in 1879, before Montana joined the United States. Yes, it is a “historical romance” but it has so much heart, action and humour.

This is the story of 4 orphan boys who become brothers of the heart and band together to raise, what they believe to be, an abandoned baby girl. The series explores all the trails they each face as they grow as a family and how they all come together to support one another.

Actually, it might be time for a re-read of this series!

Funny & Strong Women

Ladies Most Scandalous Series by Manda Collins

There are 4 books in this series that takes place in 1865, London. The women in these books are strong, independant and intent on forging their own path.

Dangerous Damsels Series by India Holton

A super fun series that takes place along side of reality in England. What would the world look like if there was a society of woman pirates who knew magic and houses could fly? That’s what makes these books so much fun!!
